Old Joy, Into the Wild and Vampire Weekend

I've watched two movies lately which share some lost, yearning, other worldly quality. Both of them stick in the mind long after the credits have rolled. Both are perfectly scored.

They are Into the Wild and Old Joy.

Old Joy in particular is an understated masterpiece; a one course meal of bread and water which becomes a thought-provoking, wine-rich banquet for the soul.

Finally, here's a band.

  1. I haven't heard of let alone seen either of these films - and now feel much the poorer for it!

  2. The best thing about Into the Wild is the soundtrack. It is a pretty good film though, it's quite moving... And visually pleasing, of course!
I've been strangely interested in Vampire Weekend recently as well... Which is strange because I've always disliked the whole "indie" thing. They're something a bit special.

  3. I think I am the only person around who does not like Vampire Weekend. Although these days I'm less sure I don't like them - perhaps I just enjoy not liking them cos everyone else does. I can be a bit stubborn like that.

Sadly I have not heard of the films.

  4. Steve, I wouldn't worry; I don't get out much!

Mega, it's a good soundtrack, although I seem to be alone in finding Eddie Vedder's voice begins to wilt my chest hair after a few tracks.

RB, it shows how out of touch I am that I thought I'd more or less discovered them. Comes to listening to Radio 4 most of the time.

  5. I have seen, and did enjoy, Into The Wild (uplifting, despite the protagonist's fate - quite a trick). Not heard of Old Joy though, but I've added it to my rental list.

  6. OMG Into the Wild was incredible, and so upsetting, I could hardly think of anything else for months... I have to see the other one too, sounds, dare I say it, better than The Holiday.

  8. Rol - I suspect it's like marmite. You may feel it's as pointless as watching paint dry. Let me know what you think when you do get to see it; I'm interested.

Daisy - Ditto; you may hate it. But if you loved 'Into the Wild', maybe...

Justme - Now I feel even sillier, if it's been on air a lot. But if you like it at least I know my taste is okay.
