Martin Stephenson and Helen McCookerybook

I came across this You Tube clip of two punk legends, Martin Stephenson (the Daintees) and my nice cousin Helen McCookerybook (Chefs, Helen & the Horns). Helen appears half way through the clip for the second song...looking somehow empty-handed without her guitar.

  1. Be great to see you at Whitstable Rod- will be a bit like one of my parties cos Rowen's coming too!
Thank you for putting this up- did you see the other one with 'Loverman'?
This was done at the Sage in Gateshead, believe it or not. What a dream to get to play there! They are a very nice bunch of musicians, all as ancient as me, and very welcoming to new folks.
Like your new hairstyle, by the way. Makes you look years younger!

  2. Sounds fun! Will there be cake then?
Yes, saw the 'Loverman' one, which is great (it comes up as the next related video on You Tube).
Glad you like the Barnet. I'm going to start a rock band or a world religion - can't make up my mind which.

  3. I don't think I'd call Martin Stephenson and the Daintees "punk" - more kind of post-Bluebells...? They played Goldsmiths (I was a student there) and went down a treat. I had the cassette of "Boat To Bolivia" and played it to death, and now can't find it on CD. Ah the ephemeral dream that is life...
PS - Groovy new profile photo!

  4. I'm sure you're right - They don't pin down to any genre readily!
You can get 'Boat to Bolivia' from Amazon at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Boat-Bolivia-Martin-Stephenson/dp/B0000794FH

The picture's from my old student card; if I tried growing all that again now, I'd probably be done for vagrancy.

  5. I liked that clip. You guys have access to so much more music than we do here, thank gawd for YouTube or we would miss out altogether!!

  6. Well, you spawned 'Flight of the Conchords', which is punching above your weight for a start. And I bet you get to hear the pipes more often than me. I would have expected you to have a flourishing folk scene though?

  7. *doffs hat to your cousin*

Had a number of H&TH tracks on cassette back then., all courtesy of Mr Peel.

I have persuaded a friend to book the "post-Bluebells" Martin Stephenson and the Daintees for his wedding next month. The bride-to-be's not convinced but it's too late.

  8. Anonymous (Lucy?) - Sound move! They absolutely won't be sorry (unless they wanted the Carpenters). I take it you're invited.
