Falling

It's ages since I blogged. Don't know why; nothing to say, I suppose. Anyway, I like K's new song. She wouldn't be persuaded to appear on camera, so she's stuck it onto some footage of the Inverness-Kyle line I took years ago.

I suppose I must have travelled that line two or three hundred times, but I never tired of it. Skye-bound, my heart lifted with every mile that the island drew closer and my office desk receded. In summer, sun sparkled on absurdly blue water and the banks wore gold epaulettes of gorse. In winter the deer lifted their heads from foraging in the snow, to watch the carriages clatter by. Like a time-lapse film houses were spruced up, and faded. Generations of sheep and cattle trod the same braes. Oil rigs appeared in Loch Carron, and then were gone. Eagles soared.

Enjoy the song.

  1. Having nothing to say never stopped me :)

Loved the film and your daugher's song (it reminded me of Amy MacDonald a bit - I hope she's not going to hate that I said that)

So glad you're back. Just lovely!

  7. Hi
I really enjoyed the vid, reminded me of British Colombia and made me feel so happy. The song was even better, I like dit so much that I went to Amazonn to buy the CD but even after a bit of a search, I can't find Kirsty's music for sale anywhere on line. Can you put a link up to where we can buy it please? Also does Kirsty read Daren Callow's blog, Music around the world? In my mind their styles/sounds (the pictures they make in my mind), danced/blended perfectly.

  8. I did. Lovely voice, nice laidback groove... and nice images too. Made me forget me arm for 2.43.

  9. Thanks for your comments, guys. And no, she wouldn't be offended of reminding anyone of Amy Macdonald (although they say of Macleods and Macdonalds, that they are either 'putting rings on each other's fingers, or dirks at each other's throats').

DJ - Sorry you had a search. She hasn't got anything on offer yet, but I'll send you some home-produced stuff, as promised in my email.

Rol - Glad it gave you some brief respite...especially as it seems to have been presciently named in your honour!

  10. DJ - I meant to say, I had a quick look at Daren Callow's web site and liked what I heard, so I'm going back for more and will show K; thanks for that tip.

  11. Hi and glad to hear you liked Daren's music, he is a good person. I haven't seen an email from you, did you send it to djkirkby@gmail.com?

  12. Good to see you are back and I loved the song and film.

As you haven't anything to say I have tagged you to say 10 honest things about yourself so you have another post ready made - see todays post on my blog (and blame Justme, she tagged me first!)

  13. Hi!
I liked Kirsty's song a lot and, having seen her sing could picture her singing, so she appeared in the camera of my mind! The film and your description were a perfect accompaniment.

  14. A double treat.
I also tried to find her music ... so just kept playing the ones here.

  15. Good stuff! The uncluttered, clear song works especially well with the lovely images. I must go there. In fact, I will. This summer....

  16. Completely - Thank you for the tag. I think I do need a prompt like that, so I'll certainly have a go.

Sarah - Hi. So you have. I wish I could rely on the camera of my mind, but I often leave it behind.

Violet - Hello. I'm glad you liked the YouTube thing. I think we'll have to sort some album she can offer. I like your blog, and was very moved by the link to Madasthmatic's post. (I recommend anyone who's reading this to go there via VioletSky's recent blog).

Chimesey - You should. It's not Oz but it's good for the soul. Even Inverness has a bit of a buzz to it. Broadford, not so much!

  17. Ah what a nice video - lovely scenery accompanied by a lovely voice.

However if you don't mind a little suggestion - the guitar sounds a little squeaky at the end of each chord refrain - I'm not a guitar expert but I've heard that this can be solved fairly easily for a smoother effect.

I do hope you find more to blog about soon BT - much though I am struggling with the opposite problem - loads to blog about and no time to do more than about one quality posting a week in the midst of a ton of job applications etc.

  18. Laura - I'm glad you're busy, and finding things to apply for. But your quality postings are always worth waiting for.

Thanks for the suggestion. Probably you're right and I will mention it. But as the guitar was the boyfriend on this one, and he's a lot more hench than me, I may have to pick my moment!!

  19. Hi BT

    Are you Fiona Laing's brother?

  20. Mike - Hi! I'm not, but I am her first cousin. I'm absolutely mystified as to how you managed to make that connection though?

  21. More and more I'm cursing my workplace for not having speakers on the computer. Will listen at home. Your video reminds me so much of childhood journeys in the other direction - down to Cornwall to see my grandmother (barking mad, usually drunk, posh and shouty - imagine a skinny alcoholic Barbara Woodhouse covered in doghair) - going over the Saltash Bridge always meant we were nearly there, and getting out at Bodmin Moor was like stepping back to the 30s....

  22. What a perfect treat for a miserable Monday here in south Lincs! That song is beautiful, BT; the film is so evocative, and as for the post - poetry!

I assume you'll be producing all K's music videos when she's a recording superstar?

  23. Lucy - Lucky you; my year working in Cornwall was one of the best. Bodmin Moor had a special character, all windblown cornish hedges and standing stones.

I think I'd have liked your grandmother (lots of my relations were posh and shouty, although seldom more than merry). I met Barbara Woodhouse at a book signing we stumbled into. Unfortunately when we got home we left the book on the stairs and the dog chewed it up.

  24. Tim - I'm so glad you liked it. Strangely she has no aspirations for fame and fortune (how she's going to keep us in the manner etc. I've no idea!)

  25. Loved it to bits! Is it on the earlier CD perchance? I might have to hit you up for a copy....

    ReplyDelete
  26. Amanda - It wasn't on the earlier one. In any case K has begun to get a bit nervous about the unauthorised covers (although all performers seem to do them). She does seem to be having a creative streak, so suggests that if you and VioletSky don't mind waiting a bit, she'll work towards putting a completely original album together, which we could then distribute more widely. I have to say that I woke up this morning with an idea and scribbled a song down. By midday she had set it to music, and I really think it's a bit special (he said modestly!). We'll try and glue a bit of film to it, so watch this space.

  27. Very nice tune.

    Daren

P.S. I don't mind the squeeky chords at all... it all depends on personal preference... perhaps put the mic a little bit further away from the guitar... or off to one side slightly.

  28. Dazza - Thanks for that. Adam's 'slap and pop'-ish technique on this song gave them problems on the built-in pick-up on K's Ibanez, so they did rig up an external one without any chance to test the results. I've been enjoying the work on your website.
